Alan was born and raised in Swindon and has been driving for over 44 years in total.
The original photo above was taken of Alan with his first car, his beloved Ford Escort Mk2 (the 1.1L version in the popular Olympic Blue), shortly after he'd passed his practical driving test on Tuesday, 31st August 1982. Aged 17, he had successfully passed his test at the first attempt.
Just under ten years later, Alan obtained his HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) Class 1 licence. Also known as Category C+E or LGV (Large Goods Vehicle), this allows you to drive the largest and heaviest vehicles on the road, weighing over 7.5 tonnes and featuring a detachable trailer up to a total combination weight of 44 tonnes. Before 1992, HGV was the widely accepted term for commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. However, when the European Union standardised licensing categories, the UK adopted LGV (Large Goods Vehicle) as the official term. Although LGV is the official term, HGV still remains in common use, and today, both terms refer to the same category of commercial lorries.
Alan passed this test, first time, on Monday, 1st April 1991 (No, it wasn't an April Fool!)
After a life-long interest in driving, Alan became an ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) on Wednesday, 31st July 1996. An ADI is a fully qualified, DVSA-registered professional legally permitted to charge for driving lessons in the UK.
This led to a highly successful career as a driving instructor, with Alan helping many hundreds of students to pass their practical driving tests. After working with several well known Swindon-based driving schools, Alan took the step of launching his own intensive driving courses business. Best Driving Courses was officially created in 2015. He also now owns and runs the highly regarded Learning2Drive company, one of the very first intensive courses driving schools in the UK along with Drivingcourses.uk.
In the same year, he passed his Motorcycle test on 1st, September - completing a hat-trick of road-based driving tests, two of which were passed in Swindon with the motorcycle test passed in Newbury.
Almost 44 years after the photo of Alan washing his first car was taken, he returned to the exact same spot on Shelley Street in Swindon to have his photo taken with the current tuition vehicle, another Ford - but this time a Focus ST Line.
...And he's still wearing Adidas!
Please note: as of Monday, 14th October 2024, Learning2Drive is now a part of the Best Driving Courses group. The same exceptionally high standard of intensive driving course tuition will continue to be provided by both driving schools following this merger.
Learning2Drive is an internet based driving school. Our carefully selected instructors are independent and work from their home address. All our instructors are fully qualified, CRB checked and approved by the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency.
Learning2Drive driving school was one of the first in the UK to introduce intensive driving courses that enables students to learn to drive in one week. In fact, we've now been around for over 40 years. Our intensive courses were first brought in to meet a growing demand from learners looking for a faster way to learn to drive than the traditional methods.
The courses immediately became popular with pupils of all ages and ability. Over the years, one week intensive driving courses have become the standard in learner driver training for Learning2Drive and we have now helped thousands of students pass their tests safely and quickly.
The success students achieve with our Intensive Courses has always been down to the hard work of our fully qualified DVSA approved driving instructors. We get to know learner drivers, their needs and how to prepare them for the practical driving test, enabling students to be ready to pass the driving test within 7 days or less.
The original Learning2Drive website was first developed in 1999 and originated by David Peers for learner drivers seeking advice on the theory and hazard perception test as well as driving courses. Since that time the site has been continuously updated and undergone several redesigns and has been online longer than any other intensive driving school in the UK.
We hope that you find the website helpful and wish you luck in your learning to drive.
